My job was to show people how to respect the woods and other hikers. There was an art to teaching people without their knowing I was doing it, just by talking. Only one group of people consistently ignored me; people who didn’t want to put their dogs on a leash. They seemed to think their dogs were the best dogs on the planet, and anyone who said otherwise must not like dogs and therefore should not be trusted.

Eventually I realized that if I wanted dog owners to listen to me about anything else, I had to stop talking about leashes and pet obedience. I do like dogs, though. That’s why I put mine on leashes.

If you’re hiking with a dog, the dog needs to be on a leash. The only other way is to train a dog so that the animal stays as close to you as a leashed dog would. I have known one dog like that; Camello did not need a leash. Your dog does.

What I do not ever want to see is a dog coming towards me on a trail with no human in sight. Your dog may be a marshmallow, but some people have a phobia about dogs. Other people hike with vicious dogs off-lead. I’ve met them. I’ve met porcupines and bears. I have never met a dog who knew better than to poop near somebody’s water source.

Pet obedience is for the good of the pet. Dogs don’t know as much as you do, so you have to be in charge. If you don’t know how to train a dog, or don’t have time to do it, and your dog is not perfectly reliable, then when your dog is off-leash the dog is in charge. Even if you do know how to train a dog well, most dogs will ignore their training if severely tempted. A leash is your insurance when that moment comes.

We call him Midnight, because, of course, he is a black cat.

He’s very friendly; even though he was homeless he has been carried by every child in the neighborhood, so he is docile and affectionate.

Actually, he’s a little too affectionate. Now when we pet him, Midnight wants to love us back, so he bites. These are little cat nips, not full blown bites, no skin broken, no blood loss, but they still hurt. What do you do about cat biting?

We don’t want to discourage his love making. The more affection we get, the more he loves it too. We’re just about ready to bring him into the house as we’re letting our three dogs get used to him. We’re training them not to chase and him not to run. This is a challenge unto itself.

I’ve never had the experience of cat biting and I just don’t know the solution to this problem. Do we squirt him with a water gun? That seems harsh to me. What about just saying “no”? Do cats respond to “bad cat” and “good cat”? Do we slap his paw and say “bad boy”?

My cat ownership is very limited as this is my first cat. I do know enough to love and cherish, take him regularly to the vet and get him neutered. I know all the essentials but I don’t know the specifics of how to train a cat.

What would you do? How would you control your cat biting? Do you accept it as a love token and part of the cost of pet ownership? Or is behavior modification desired, or even necessary?

Help me adjust to either the cat biting or show me what cat training tricks I can use to make my cat be affectionate in a less hurtful way.

Originally Written By 1800-Pet-Shed.Com
Like people, dogs are considered to be individuals. They have mood, preferred activities and interests. It is especially true about Siberian Husky pets.

Being Arctic dogs by birth, they have a somewhat icy and cold character. However, love and consistency can work wonders.

Husky adjusts to “apartmental” conditions with great difficulty, and you will hardly ever be able to train a Husky in your apartment. So if you have made up your mind for Husky training, take pet training supplies, and fulfill your Husky training in a large yard with a high fence, and a wire buried at its base, as Siberian Husky pets are “Stars of Prison Break.”

As I have already mentioned, Siberian Husky pets get bored easily if they are not kept busy. It is important that your pet training supplies include not only pet training collars and dog brushes, but also things that will keep your strong-willed and intelligent Husky mentally and physically occupied.

Never forget that Husky is a pack animal and will struggle for its dominance. If you don’t want to turn Husky training into “Husky walking all over you,” then show your beloved pet that you are the ” leader” at home. Using food rewards will also help in Husky training.

Pet training collars will help only if you try Husky training in a park. But pet training collar prevents Husky from romping, jumping and running — things that are extremely meaningful for this free-spirit animal. Tying it in pet training collars will be a mistake also because of its being an escape artist.

Husky training should be done in cool climate. But if it is hot you should provide your Husky with shade and air conditioner.

Husky training takes lots of energy and time, but if you really love this animal you won’t feel tired or distressed. Just have faith in yourself, and good luck in your Husky training!

Originally Written By 1800-Pet-Shed.Com
If you have a pet cat, then you probably know how difficult it is to train it.

Cats resemble a very self-confident person who thinks that he is right in everything. You may tell your cat not to behave in a particular way a hundred times, but he won’t obey you until he himself decides to change his behavior.

My cat isn’t an exception. Until recently, he used to jump on the table, walk on it, dropping the dishes and food. It was a lot of fun for him. But his fun resulted in a great shock for me. So, I realized one thing–it’s high time that I study cat psychology to know how to “educate” my cat.

The basic rule for training a cat is not to shout at him. Cat pets do not tolerate when someone reprimands or shouts at them. If you shout at your cat, he is more likely not to pay attention to you, than to change his behavior. Besides, cats remember everything and they are revengeful.

So, you should be careful if you really want to find a way to change your cat’s behavior.

For instance, be patient if your cat scratches the floor (which is a natural behavior for cats). Take your cat to some other place where it can scratch. Praise your cat and encourage him when he does something good. Cats will undoubtedly change their behavior if they get something alluring or desirable, for example, a piece of fish.

Cats learn by experiencing something. If the experience is good, they will certainly do it again. Otherwise, they’ll never repeat it. So, if you want your cat to stop his naughty behavior, just do something that will cause an unpleasant association.

For example, I solved my problem in the following way: I knew that my cat hated and avoided water, so I simply placed a bowl of water on the table. He jumped into it and… so far I have not seen him jumping on the table.

Originally Written By 1800-Pet-Shed.Com
Snakes are pets that are most fond of escaping from their enclosures and hiding in different gaps. So, if you have a pet snake you should always be prepared for a circumstantial and detailed snake hunt.

Pet snakes mostly escape at night, when it is dark in the house, and all around are sleeping. If there’s even a very thin gap in the cage, they almost always manage to escape.

While looking for your snake take into account the thing that the pet can be in every possible corner and in every tiny box. So, take a flashlight, a mirror and a yardstick and start checking everywhere: in and between the kitchen appliances, under and in the beds, under the rugs and furniture, in all the boxes, in all the bookcases and in every bag and basket.

During all this time keep the lid of his cage open. He may return to his enclosure, realizing that there’s no place like home. However, that doesn’t mean that you must sit and wait for the snake to appear.

Take some flour and sprinkle it in every doorway. In the morning you will see whether it has changed its hiding place or not. If it doesn’t help either, get a small box, put a new, preyed mouse in it and put it near its cage. By the way, make some holes on the box for the snake to smell the meal. In most cases, the snake doesn’t resist the temptation of having a great snack.

After all the efforts you make trying to find it, you’ll never again put it in the same cage, right? So, in order to avoid all this, buy a cage that has no gaps and is safe.

If you are kind, compassionate, love nature and enjoy taking care of animals, and if you want to change your hobby into a profession, then you should undoubtedly choose a career that involves working with animals.

Life is a game that we have to play, and we have to be strong to pass all the levels successfully. It dictates its rules and sets challenges that very often we have to accept unwillingly. Choosing a career is one of those challenges.

Education is very important for those who want to find their place in this world, and who want to have their contribution in the history of civilization. Personality, interests, skills, moral values–all these factors may serve as a base for making the right choice.

An animal career is a very noble profession as it is connected with nature itself.

There are two jobs especially that involve working with animals:

Veterinarian: Veterinarians take care of dogs, cats or other animals. Most veterinarians diagnose animal diseases, immunize them, cure animals having health problems and perform operations. They help and save the lives of animals.

Zoologist: Zoologists study animals. They know everything about their anatomies, species, structures, psychologies and behaviors.

Other career options include being an animal physiologist, veterinary pathologist and animal trainer. But all of them have something in common: love towards animals.

If you want to have a pet at home, you need to hire a dog trainer to make your coexistence possible.

It is always fun having a dog at home. I admit that in some sense pets make us feel better. But they also cause difficulties when disobeying.

Are your commands ignored and disdained? Do you have problems with your pet at home or outdoors? Until when are you going to close your eyes to a problem that definitely exists? Turn to a dog trainer to help your dog behave.

Dogs are not simple animals devoid of intelligence. It is wrong to take into consideration only their physical presence as they go through a series of cognitive developments. So they need to be stimulated both physically and mentally.

A highly qualified and experienced dog trainer will help your dog get not only physical training but will also contribute to the mental growth of your four-legged friend.

A dog trainer works with animals, but he actually works with people, too. He will also provide the pet owner with proper techniques, guidance and assistance, showing him or her the foolproof way to success.

You shouldn’t hesitate to turn to a skilled dog trainer. You will see that your pet obeys, responds to the commands and interprets your signals.
