The Black Widow practices cannibalism after mating and is called “widow” for this reason. While the Brown Recluse or Violin Spider bite is rare, it can result in death. The Australian Redback Spider, also of the widow species, follows the same practices of cannibalism after mating and is considered extremely dangerous to humans.
