Adopt A Dog: Enlarge Your Family

Today many people prefer to adopt a dog instead of going directly to a breeder.

How is dog adoption different from buying a dog? When you adopt a dog, you also adopt a great responsibility to take care of an animal that was once abandoned.

Many dogs and other animals spend weeks, months and even years in rescue centers after losing their home. When you adopt one of them, you provide them with the family and love they once had. But that’s not enough!

Dog adopting is not an easy task and it needs lots of patience. The first two or three weeks you and your pet are getting to know each other. You need time to understand the character and personality of your dog. And your dog in turn needs time to understand why you have taken him to your home and how he is expected to behave.

Adopted dogs differ from other dogs as they are afraid of being abandoned again. That’s why they need more attention, care and love.

It may take time for your adopted dog to adjust himself to the new home, rules, bed and generally all conditions. He may cry or bark and may not have a good appetite.

So, when adopting a dog, think about all the necessary things that will help him feel comfortable. This refers not only to the food, bowls (both for food and water), bedding and toys, but also to the warm atmosphere that should be present in your home. It will help your new family member feel comfortable and a sense of belonging.

Also try to spend as much time as possible with him–take him for regular walks, play games and so on. And never leave him alone, at least until he gets adjusted to his new life, otherwise he may fall into depression.

The process of “adjusting” to the new family may be very easy for some dogs, while for others it may be quite long-lasting. Some of them will even be unable to adjust at all.

Whether he will get adjusted to you or not, depends on two things–your attitude and his character. So long as you give him the love, care, attention and support he needs, you will gradually feel the first signs of love and gratitude towards you!
