Delightfully bright colors, exotic designs, delicate and graceful moves — aquarium tropical fish are indeed popular among true fans of natural beauty.
Ancient Egyptians and Chinese already knew how stress-removing those amazing fish could be and kept them for entertainment. While in those early days tropical fish-keeping was a luxury hobby for the rich, nowadays fish-keeping has become much easier.
Aquarium tropical fish are mostly produced throughout the Far East; however, some of these ornamental species are bred in South Florida.
Though all kinds of ornamental fish come from tropical regions of the world, some of them may be living deep down the ocean in fairly cold conditions, while others may originate from a small puddle somewhere in the African savannah. Thus, the quality of water for a certain species may vary greatly.
In fact, the term aquarium tropical fish is often used to identify freshwater fish, while saltwater tropical fish may be called marine fish. Hence, while different tropical fish species may look very beautiful together, some combinations may cause troubles as the preferences and adaptability of certain fish types may not match.
The tropical fish in your aquarium may be:
- Wild-caught specimens
- Single-species selectively bred in captivity
- Hybrids of more than one species
The captive-bred species tend to be healthier, more adaptive and less expensive, but are less colorful, if not selectively bred.
Aquarium tropical fish are generally sensitive to their living conditions. However, be sure that your fish will flourish in your aquarium if they are carefully and attentively looked after.
