Chihuahuas are such small dogs that you can carry them in your bag or even your pocket wherever you go.
They are great companions, especially for ladies who like sweet, amiable dogs. These pretty creatures have a short, but long body, big straight ears and expressive eyes.
The average height is from six to nine inches and the average weight varies between two to eight pounds. Despite their small size, these dogs are fearless and are ready to protect your house whenever you are away.
The Chihuahua is the oldest, not to mention the smallest, breed in the US. Popular colors for this breed include gray, brown, tan, black and white, and they can have short or long hair. Chihuahua dogs can live as much as 15 years.
If you want to keep a Chihuahua, as a pet owner you should be aware of the following things:
- Don’t play too rough with your Chihuahua, as these dogs are fragile and may be injured while playing (and that is the reason why you shouldn’t buy a Chihuahua dog for your child, as careless handling can do great harm).
- Don’t let him feel alone or ignored. These small, lovely creatures need to be cherished and caressed often.
- Chihuahuas are notoriously difficult to train as they are very stubborn, so make sure your patience can withstand the frustrations you will likely face.
Like all dogs they need quite a lot of exercise. If you’re going to walk your Chihuahua on chilly days–especially below 35 degrees Fahrenheit–make sure he is dressed warmly with small dog sweaters or coats to protect him from catching cold.
As for feeding, like all dogs he should be fed food containing meat and some fiber. Adult Chihuahua dogs should be fed two to three times a day, while puppies should eat four to five times a day in small amounts. He should be bathed once a month, and when doing so make sure that his ears don’t get wet, otherwise he may get ear infections.
So, if you really want to make this tiny creature your permanent family member, don’t think only about the joy that he will bring to your home. Be ready to give him the proper, meticulous care he needs.
