Don’t Let Your Dog Get Depressed

Dont Let Your Dog Get DepressedLike humans, dogs also suffer from depression.

These pretty creatures are emotional and vulnerable. Thus, as a pet owner you have to know what may hurt your pet in order to avoid it.

Dog depression may be caused by chemical imbalance in the brain, unwanted changes, loss of a true human companion, a playmate and certainly, lack of attention.

You may recognize dog depression by the following symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of interest in usual activities
  • Slow movement
  • Anxious behavior

If you notice these symptoms in your dog, take him immediately to a veterinarian. If the reason for depression is a chemical imbalance, he’ll prescribe an  anti-depressant, like Prozac.

If it’s due to some unwanted changes or a loss, do your best to support your dog. For instance, when two dogs grow up together, playing and having fun, the death of one of them can lead to depression. You can bring home another dog, ideally of the same breed.

Also if the family moves to another house, a dog may not get used to it easily. Take some objects which are familiar to him, for example toys. Let your dog sniff and investigate the place even if it annoys you. This way, your dog can explore and get used to his new surroundings.

But the worst thing that can happen to dogs is the loss of their owners, their true human companions. These faithful confidants look extremely sad and seem to have no motivation and desire to live.

Another reason for depression may be the birth of a child. When a baby is born into a family, the dog is no longer the center of attention and he may get depressed. So try to devote some attention to him.

Unlike humans, dogs recover sooner and in general, dog depression lasts for two weeks.  Do your best to keep your pet healthy, and remember that a healthy dog is a happy dog.
